Is the Burj Khalifa Era Ending Soon?
Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, will retain its title for several years to come. However, its dominance is expected to be challenged as Saudi Arabia’s super-tall projects continue to progress. One of the most notable projects is the Jeddah Tower, targeting completion in 2028. Designed to soar over one kilometre in height, it is projected to surpass the Burj Khalifa. Interestingly, the architect behind Jeddah Tower, Adrian Smith, also designed the Burj Khalifa.
Saudi Arabia’s ambition to build super-tall structures marks a new chapter in the Middle East’s skyscraper competition. Alongside Jeddah Tower, the kingdom is also preparing another project planned to reach two kilometres in height. Known as the Rise Tower, this futuristic structure is still in the design phase but is intended to become the tallest building ever constructed by humans. The Rise Tower will serve as the centrepiece of a 306-square-kilometre futuristic development called North Pole in Riyadh. Designed with 678 floors, it will feature premium amenities including luxury hotels, exclusive restaurants, observation decks, and high-end office spaces. Although discussions began in 2023, the project is expected to take considerable time before entering major construction. If realised as planned, Rise Tower will significantly exceed the Burj Khalifa’s height.
Amid Saudi Arabia’s ambitions, Dubai developer Emaar Properties is reportedly preparing a new ‘super tower’ to maintain Dubai’s dominance in the global race for the tallest building. Meanwhile, construction of the Jeddah Tower has been accelerated after years of delays.
