Is the 2027 Hajj Cost Set to Rise?

Minister of Hajj and Umrah Mochamad Irfan Yusuf has opened the possibility of an increase in the 2027 Hajj pilgrimage costs (BPIH). However, Irfan has not yet disclosed the nominal amount of the increase. “(The Hajj cost) will most likely increase, but we are working on how, if there is an increase later, it will not be too burdensome for our pilgrims,” he said at the Pondok Gede Hajj Dormitory in Jakarta, as quoted from Antara on Sunday, 5 July 2026. According to Irfan, this potential is triggered by an increase in the cost components of organising the Hajj, ranging from the price of avtur, service tariffs set by the Saudi Arabian government, to the weakening of the rupiah exchange rate against the US dollar. He said the Saudi Arabian government is also changing Category D services to be upgraded to Category C, which subsequently increases the cost of Hajj services. Going forward, the government will discuss guidelines for setting the BPIH and the Hajj travel costs (Bipih) with Commission VIII of the House of Representatives, which is the working partner of the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. Separately, the Chair of Commission VIII of the DPR, Marwan Dasopang, stated that the potential increase in Hajj costs is a difficult factor to avoid due to the surge in prices of various components. The National Awakening Party politician acknowledged the challenges ahead are not light. “The possibility of Hajj costs increasing. This is a challenge that must be answered together to the Indonesian people,” Marwan said after attending a national working meeting evaluating the 2026 Hajj in Jakarta on Saturday, 3 July, in a press release from the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah. According to Marwan, uncontrollable components such as flight costs are one of the challenges in maintaining the BPIH. He claimed he would seek the best solution so as not to burden the congregation. “Commission VIII together with the Ministry of Hajj will review all cost components. If it is still possible to maintain, of course we will strive for it,” said Marwan. The 2026 Hajj Pilgrimage Costs (BPIH) amounted to Rp 87.4 million per pilgrim. This Hajj cost decreased by Rp 2 million compared to the 2025 BPIH of Rp 89.4 million. The determination of this year’s BPIH was agreed upon by the government and the DPR in a working meeting on Wednesday, 29 October 2025.
