Is private security permissible?
Is private security permissible?
From Media Indonesia
In connection with the recent murder of a PT Asaba executive,
the Jakarta military commander has indicated that security
services by soldiers for individual civilians are allowed but
they should not provide military backup.
This statement is important because I wonder if any law
permits Indonesian Military (TNI) members to provide such
services, and if this is allowed, can anyone enjoy the benefit of
an armed guard? What about the function of the police?
When M. Yusuf was named defense minister and military
commander, his first step was to replace his company of guards,
comprising special forces members, with noncombat soldiers. His
argument was that it was not necessary for soldiers with special
and expensive training to guard him.
The provision of security services by soldiers also reflects
on the military's image. In the case of failure, as in the Asaba
killing, in which the guard was also shot dead, how does one
maintain the image of the elite corps? What mission did he die
for?
The most important thing is that the nation, including the
TNI, fosters mutual trust and respect amid criticisms that are
frequently unfair. Some improvements must and can be achieved by
us all for the sake of the country.
