Australian fashion retailer Cotton On has responded to rumours claiming the company will close its stores and exit the Asian market, amid a trend of retail store closures. In an official statement, the company affirmed that the information is untrue and misleading. “There are no plans to exit Asia. Reports claiming that Cotton On stores in this region will be closed are inaccurate,” a company representative stated, quoted from the Straits Times on Tuesday (31/3/2026). This clarification follows reports regarding the liquidation of an entity named Cotton On Asia. The company emphasised that this entity was merely an inactive holding company and does not affect business operations. “That entity has never operated stores or employed staff. This liquidation has no impact on customers, teams, stores, suppliers, or operations in Asia,” the company wrote. Previously, an official notice indicated that Cotton On Asia would undergo voluntary liquidation, with a liquidator appointed from PwC Singapore. Although the holding entity is being liquidated, the main business units continue to operate. In Singapore, for example, Cotton On Singapore is still operating normally as a clothing retail business. Even as of 30 March 2026, there were more than 30 active Cotton On stores in the country. Cotton On is part of the Cotton On Group, founded by Nigel Austin in 1991. In the Asian region, Cotton On oversees several brands such as Cotton On, Cotton On Body, Cotton On Kids, Typo, and Rubi. Globally, the group operates in around 20 countries with more than 20,000 employees.
