Is It Safe to Switch Fuel Brands at Different Petrol Stations? Expert Explanation
JAKARTA — Many motorists frequently refuel their vehicles at different petrol stations with various brands, typically driven by factors such as location, fuel availability, or price adjustments. This practice raises questions about whether frequently changing fuel brands could negatively impact engine performance or longevity.
According to an expert consulted by Kompas.com on Saturday, 7 March 2026: “As long as the fuel meets the specifications set by the government, for instance in line with standards from the Directorate General of Oil and Gas, it is in principle safe to use even if the brands are different.”
Every type of fuel sold in Indonesia has specific quality standards, such as a Research Octane Number (RON) rating that must be met. This means that as long as motorists use fuel with the same RON rating as recommended by their vehicle manufacturer, engine performance should not experience any significant issues.
The expert further explained that in some cases, fuel supplied to different branded petrol stations may actually originate from the same source. The differences typically lie in the additive packages that each company adds to the fuel. These additives generally function to maintain the cleanliness of engine components, such as the combustion chamber or intake valves. However, these additives have minimal impact on the engine’s main performance.
Switching between brands may result in slightly different engine responsiveness or changes in fuel consumption. Nevertheless, the expert emphasised that changing fuel brands will not damage the engine as long as the fuel quality meets standards and the octane rating remains in line with the vehicle manufacturer’s recommendations.
Vehicle owners are therefore advised to prioritise using fuel with RON values that match their engine specifications. In doing so, engine performance remains optimal whilst maintaining fuel efficiency and reducing vehicle emissions.
