Kompas.com – Some people are accustomed to consuming coffee or tea during Suhoor, hoping it will maintain their energy and prevent drowsiness during the day while fasting.
However, this habit is not always appropriate. Consuming caffeinated drinks during Suhoor can actually have a negative impact on the body, especially concerning fluid balance.
This was stated by Clinical Nutrition Specialist, Dr. Jovita Amelia, M.Sc., Sp.Gk., who said that coffee and tea should not be consumed during Suhoor because they have a diuretic effect, which can increase urine production.
According to her, this needs to be a concern because during fasting, the body does not receive adequate fluid intake for a long period.
The diuretic effect of coffee and tea causes the body to urinate more often after consumption.
As a result, the fluids that should be stored for needs during fasting are actually reduced.
“This is certainly not good during fasting because it can increase the risk of dehydration,” added Dr. Jovita.
If this occurs, the body can become dehydrated more quickly, especially when carrying out busy activities during the day or being in a hot environment.
Dehydration itself can cause various complaints, ranging from fatigue, dizziness, to difficulty concentrating.
In general, caffeine in coffee is known to stimulate the production of stomach acid.
In some people, this can trigger discomfort such as heartburn, nausea, or even worsen symptoms of gastritis.
Therefore, people with a history of stomach problems are advised to be more careful in consuming coffee, especially during Suhoor.
