Is Blood Type O More Prone to High Cholesterol? IPB Expert Explains
Public doubts must be answered through a transparent legal process. The issue of whether blood type O is more susceptible to high cholesterol has been a hot topic of discussion among the public. However, is a specific blood type truly the main determinant of fat levels in a person’s blood?
A lecturer from the Faculty of Medicine and Nutrition (FKGiz) at IPB University, Dr Christy Efiyanti, SpPD, provided her explanation. According to her, to date, scientific evidence regarding the relationship between blood type and cholesterol levels has shown mixed results, so a definite conclusion cannot yet be drawn.
“Some studies have indeed found higher cholesterol levels in individuals with blood type O compared to other blood types. However, there are also studies showing no relationship between the ABO blood group and blood cholesterol levels,” said Dr Christy.
She stressed that the relationship between blood type and the risk of cardiovascular disease still requires further research. This is because a person’s cholesterol levels are influenced by mechanisms far more complex than just the blood type factor.
Rather than fixating on blood type, Dr Christy asserted that lifestyle is the most influential factor in spiking cholesterol levels in the body. Daily habits play a vital role in determining a person’s lipid profile.
To keep cholesterol levels within normal limits, Dr Christy advised the public to focus on consistently adopting a healthy lifestyle without worrying excessively about their blood type.
In closing, the internal medicine specialist reminded the public of the importance of regular health checks. “Routinely undergo medical check-ups to detect health problems early and receive treatment from an early stage before it is too late and becomes difficult to treat,” she concluded.
