Irwan wins motocross race

JAKARTA (JP): Yogyakarta rider Irwan Ardiansyah took out the overall championship title for the national motocross races at Lido Lake Resort, in Sukabumi, West Java, Sunday.

Irwan, riding a Yamaha YZ 125, dominated the 125cc competition and finished second in the 250cc event behind Steven Andrew of Australia.

The placings earned Irwan the most points (72), much to the delight of the 15,000-strong crowd which packed the circuit's stands.

Sunday's races were the second of the eight-leg national championship series this season.

Antara reported that Andrew was unchallenged in the 250cc, but only managed to finish sixth in the 125cc after his motorcycle became entwined with his Indonesian rival Satya Sunarso's shortly after flag off. The unusual accident cost both riders a lap.

The Australian bruised his wrist, while Satya was rushed to a hospital after injuring his thigh. (lnt)
