Irregularities in West Jakarta Accountant's 'Mugging' Case Revealed as Fabrication

An accountant, a man with the initials AC, fabricated a police report concerning a mugging in Cengkareng, West Jakarta. AC admitted to making the false report to claim insurance so that the instalments on his laptop would be halted. AC claimed he lost a Lenovo Lebion laptop worth Rp 27.3 million after it was seized by muggers. However, it later emerged that AC’s report was false. AC was never mugged. He recklessly filed a false police report to claim insurance so that the instalments on his laptop, which had been running for five months, would be considered settled. “The laptop is worth around Rp 27.3 million and only about five instalments had been paid. Based on the police report that he was a mugging victim, the complainant intended to file a claim with the finance company so that the laptop instalments could be stopped,” said West Jakarta Metro Police Criminal Investigation Unit Mobile Investigation Unit Head AKP George Ruben AY in a statement on Saturday (25/7/2026). During questioning at the police station, AC admitted to fabricating the mugging story because he felt burdened by the laptop instalments. “The main motive was to obtain an insurance claim so he would no longer be burdened by the laptop instalments,” he said. The fabrication by AC was uncovered after police noticed several irregularities. Firstly, the laptop he claimed was lost to muggers was actually at a service centre. “The laptop was never seized; it was at a service centre in the Mangga Dua area undergoing repairs,” said West Jakarta Metro Police Criminal Investigation Unit Mobile Investigation Head AKP George Ruben AY in a statement on Friday (24/7/2026). This fact was corroborated by a service receipt and proof of purchase verified by investigators. In the report, he also claimed to have suffered a stab wound to his left arm while resisting the perpetrator. However, upon further investigation, it was discovered that AC had deliberately injured himself to convince the police he had been mugged.
