Jakarta (ANTARA) - Iron fencing at a park under the Kampung Melayu flyover in East Jakarta has been stolen by thieves in the last four days.

“A week ago, the fence was still there, but in the last few days, around three to four days, it has all been taken, very quickly by the thieves,” said a local resident named Ana (38) at the Kampung Melayu Flyover, East Jakarta, on Tuesday.

She recounted that the perpetrators acted openly at certain times without arousing residents’ suspicion. The group, numbering more than five people, carried out their activities around dawn or late afternoon.

“They worked casually, so people who saw them did not get suspicious. They were thought to be official officers carrying out dismantling or maintenance of the park facilities,” said Ana.

She admitted to having seen the group carrying tools such as crowbars and hammers to remove the iron fencing from its base. After being dismantled, the iron was immediately loaded onto a bajaj that was already waiting nearby.

“I saw them transport it using a bajaj that was ready. The fence was placed on the bajaj and then taken away. The ones taking it were not from around here, because we did not recognise them,” Ana said.

Meanwhile, another resident named Lilis (39) said she had seen a group of more than five thieves attempting to remove the iron fencing in the afternoon.

“It was quite busy at the time, but we did not realise they were thieves. There were many of them, they took it in stages, and over time the iron fence here became increasingly empty,” Lilis revealed.

She urged that supervision under the Kampung Melayu flyover be tightened so that public assets are not stolen by irresponsible parties.
