Irianese observe world rights day

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Hundreds of women and children
distributed flowers to passers-by and motorists in the Irian Jaya
capital of Jayapura as part of the activities marking World Human
Rights Day on Monday.

A free speech rally was held against the backdrop of many
unresolved human rights abuses in Irian Jaya, while children were
disseminating flowers at the Sentani and Abepura traffic circles,
the state elementary school and the provincial legislative body.

Event Coordinator Betarix Koibur said the activity was aimed
at reminding people about the killings of civilians in the
province, and that the killers had not been brought to justice.

She said the event was deliberately low-key because many local
people were still mourning last month's suspected murder of top
Papuan leader Theys Hiyo Eluay. --Antara
