Irianese killed by mob

JAKARTA (JP): Irianese Yuda Bongus Ibo, 33, was beaten to death by about 30 people in Kampung Srengseng, Kebayoran Lama district, South Jakarta.

According to Yuda's cousin, Eric, Yuda was attacked by seven unknown people, one of whom held a knife, on Wednesday evening in front of Yuda's rented house in Kampung Srengseng.

"Yuda tried to escape, but the attackers shouted: "thief, thief." More than 20 people came out of their houses and chased Yuda," Eric told reporters yesterday at the morgue of the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital.

Yuda, a diver for the offshore contractor PT Wiratman, was mobbed by almost 30 people in the swamp near the house, Eric added.

"I don't know why they attacked Yuda," Eric said.

Another relative said he believed that the owner of the house, Ratno, knew the man who stabbed Yuda.

Eric said the police have arrested one of the seven attackers.

According to Yusuf, a morgue officer, there was blood coming from Yuda's ears, indicating that he had been beaten to death by blunt objects.

Yuda is survived by his Javanese wife Suyatmi. Yuda married Suyatmi six months ago.

The body will be buried at Suyatmi's village in Jepara, Central Java.(04)
