Irfan Hakim Applauds Karawang Prison's Livestock Programme for Supporting Food Security
Television presenter Irfan Hakim has praised the livestock programme at Karawang Class IIA Correctional Institution (Lapas) in West Java, judging it to support the rehabilitation of inmates as well as national food security.
“This is not merely rehabilitation, it is also making a real contribution to food security,” said Irfan Hakim in a statement received in Jakarta on Thursday.
Irfan considered the use of land at Karawang Prison to be a tangible implementation of the action programme of Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto, which aligns with the Asta Cita of President Prabowo Subianto, particularly in the field of food security.
He said every inch of land was being used productively. Previously empty plots have been developed into rice fields, plantations and livestock areas.
“What I saw was not just a slogan, because the programme is genuinely running. The directions of Minister Agus Andrianto have been translated into real work in the field,” he said.
Of the seven hectares of land in total, four hectares are used as the prison area, while the remaining three hectares are used for farming, plantations, livestock and fisheries activities.
Accompanied by the head of Karawang Class IIA Prison, Ma’ruf Prasetyo, Irfan toured the various rehabilitation facilities. According to him, the programme does not focus solely on livestock, but also shapes the character of the inmates.
He observed inmates taking part in various activities, such as scouting, sports, skills training, barista training, the arts and religious guidance, with a schedule organised from before dawn until late afternoon.
“Their daily routine is organised from before dawn until late afternoon with productive activities,” Irfan noted.
In addition, he toured the rice fields, plantation areas and the Special Telecommunications Shop (Wartelsus) service, which allows inmates to make video calls to their families.
According to Irfan, the experience reminded him that everyone has the opportunity to better themselves and to use their freedom to do useful things.
Meanwhile, Ma’ruf Prasetyo, head of Karawang Class IIA Prison, said all rehabilitation programmes at Karawang Prison had been aligned with the directives of Minister of Immigration and Corrections Agus Andrianto.
“LASKAR Farm does not only produce livestock and agricultural products. Most importantly, it builds character, responsibility and discipline, while supporting national food security as part of the government’s Asta Cita,” said Ma’ruf.
