Moscow (ANTARA) - Irish Foreign Minister Helen McEntee said that her country opposes a joint United States and Israel attack on Iran without a mandate from the United Nations. ‘My position and the government’s position are clear — the military operations by the United States and Israel currently do not have a mandate or authorisation from the United Nations, and there is no effort to seek such authorisation,’ McEntee told parliament on Thursday (5 March). She stressed that Ireland’s stance on the use of military force outside a UN mandate has long been clear and widely known. McEntee also emphasised that all states must comply with international law and the principles of the UN Charter. According to her, the UN system is an important security factor for small states, including Ireland. On 28 February, the United States and Israel launched a series of strikes against several targets in Iran, including in Tehran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran then launched retaliatory missile strikes at Israel and at US military facilities in the Middle East. The attacks occurred amid nuclear talks between Iran and the United States mediated by Oman and taking place in Geneva, Switzerland.
