Istanbul — Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has stated that Iraq will not permit any party to use its territory as a basis for launching attacks against Iran, during a telephone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Wednesday.

However, Sudani emphasised that targeting Iraqi territory constitutes a violation of sovereignty and undermines Baghdad’s efforts to end the conflict and return to dialogue, whilst Iraq remains committed to Iran’s security and sovereignty, according to a statement from his office on X.

He also expressed “Iraq’s rejection and condemnation of the unjust war targeting Iran, emphasising his country’s concerns regarding security and peace in the region and among its brotherly peoples.”

Sudani stated that Iraq is prepared to make efforts to end the conflict and return to “the logic of dialogue and peaceful solutions, far from the language of violence that threatens regional and international security and stability.”

On 28 February, the United States and Israel launched a combined assault on Iran, which has since killed more than 1,300 people, including Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader, as well as more than 150 female students.

Tehran responded with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf states that host United States military assets, thereby disrupting global markets and causing energy prices to surge.
