Iraq seeks ASEAN support
MANILA (UPI): Iraq is seeking the support of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations to help persuade the United Nations to lift its economic sanctions against the Middle East country.
Foreign Affairs Secretary Domingo Siazon said the Philippines is considering buying oil from Iraq once the sanction is lifted. Iraq's National Assembly Speaker Sadoon Hamadi has visited several ASEAN members in a bid to consolidate opinion.
"Speaker Hamadi has been traveling to Indonesia and Malaysia and of course they are asking for an early lifting of the UN sanctions if possible," Siazon said.
Hamadi met with President Fidel Ramos yesterday.
