Iraq Investigates Attempted Drone Attack on Saudi Oil Facilities

Baghdad (ANTARA) - Sabah al-Nauman, spokesperson for the Iraqi military commander-in-chief, has said the Iraqi government is investigating an attempted drone attack on a number of oil facilities in Saudi Arabia in order to take firm action against those responsible.

Earlier, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused pro-Iranian groups in Iraq of launching the attack on oil facilities in Riyadh Province and Sharqiyah Province (Eastern Province) using drones.

“The government is currently examining the available evidence and information and, based on the results of the investigation, will take legal action against anyone proven to have been involved in the attack,” said Sabah al-Nauman.

He emphasised that the Iraqi government remains firmly committed to the principle of good neighbourliness and will not allow Iraqi territory to be used as a route or command base for any aggression against brotherly or friendly nations.

“The Iraqi government will not tolerate any attempt to damage or harm relations with Saudi Arabia, and will continue to act to guarantee the security of that country and strengthen its sovereignty,” said al-Nauman.

Earlier, Kuwait was also reported to have repeatedly accused Iraq of attempting to launch attacks from its territory.

In a statement on Monday (27/7), the Saudi Ministry of Defence said its air defence systems had intercepted and destroyed a number of drones launched from Iraqi territory targeting oil facilities within the kingdom’s territory.

“Saudi Arabia has the right to defend itself, its territory and its critical infrastructure, and has the right to respond at the appropriate time and place,” the ministry said.
