The Iraqi government has announced three days of national mourning following the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. Iraq has expressed its condolences to the Iranian people and the Islamic world.

“With deep sorrow and grief, we convey our condolences to the honourable people of Iran and all Muslims over the martyrdom of the scholar and mujahid, the Supreme Leader, His Eminence Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Husseini al-Khamenei, whom we consider one of the principal figures of the Prophet’s family,” said Iraqi Government Spokesperson Bassem Al-Awadi, in a statement released by the Iraqi News Agency (INA) as reported by Al-Jazeera on Sunday (1 March 2026).

Iraq has characterised the attack on Iran as a reprehensible act and a violation of international law. “As a result of the blatant aggression and reprehensible actions that violate all humanitarian and moral norms, and clearly breach international law and conventions,” the spokesperson stated.

Khamenei was killed in an attack carried out by the United States and Israel against Iran on Saturday (28 February). Iran subsequently announced 40 days of mourning and 7 days of national holiday to mourn Khamenei’s death.

Additionally, Iran launched retaliatory strikes against 27 US military bases across the Arab region. One of the US bases targeted by Iranian retaliatory strikes is located in Iraq.
