Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei has been killed in an attack conducted by the United States and Israel. The Iraqi government has expressed its condolences and announced three days of national mourning for his death.

“With deep sorrow and grief, we extend our condolences to the people of Iran and all Muslims for the martyrdom of the scholar and mujahid, the Supreme Leader, His Eminence Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Husseini al-Khamenei, whom we consider one of the principal figures of the family of the Prophet,” stated Iraqi Government Spokesperson Bassem Al-Awadi in a statement released by the Iraqi News Agency (INA), as reported by Al-Jazeera.

Iraq has condemned the attack on Iran, characterising it as a violation of international law. “As a result of overt aggression and reprehensible conduct that violates all humanitarian and moral norms, and clearly violates international law and conventions,” Al-Awadi stated.

Khamenei was killed in the attack carried out by the United States and Israel on Iran on Saturday, 28 February. Iran subsequently announced 40 days of mourning and seven days of national holidays to mourn Khamenei’s death.

In response, Iran has launched retaliatory strikes against 27 US military bases across the Arab region. One of the US bases targeted in Iran’s retaliatory attack is located in Iraq.
