Iran's UN Representative: Iran Has Right to Maintain Peace and Security in the Strait of Hormuz
United Nations, New York — Iran’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, stated on Thursday, 12 March, that his country possesses an “inherent right” to maintain peace and security in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iravani told media that Iran fully respects and remains committed to the principle of freedom of navigation based on maritime law.
“However, the current situation in the region, including in the Strait of Hormuz, is not the result of Iran’s exercise of legitimate self-defence rights. Rather, it is a direct consequence of destabilising actions by the United States in launching aggression against Iran and damaging regional security,” he stated.
Iran’s newly appointed supreme leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, on Thursday called for the continuation of closing the Strait of Hormuz, stating that blocking the Strait of Hormuz must remain a continuing strategy.
