Iran’s parliamentary speaker, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has issued an ultimatum to the United States to accept the terms in Tehran’s 14-point proposal or face “failure”. The ultimatum, as reported by AFP on Tuesday (12/5/2026), was delivered after US President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s counter-proposal, which he described as a “stupid” and “rubbish” proposal. Trump also described the US-Iran ceasefire in place since early April as being in a “critical condition”. In his latest response, Ghalibaf emphasised that Washington must accept Tehran’s “rights” if it wishes to end the conflict that has lasted more than two months, as peace negotiations remain deadlocked following the failure of the initial round to yield a breakthrough last month. “There is no other alternative but to accept the rights of the Iranian people, as outlined in the 14-point proposal. Any other approach will be entirely fruitless; only failure upon failure,” Ghalibaf stated firmly in a message via social media platform X. “The longer it drags on, the more American taxpayers will bear the cost,” quipped Ghalibaf, who serves as Iran’s chief negotiator in talks with the US. Iran has refused to back down in its war against the US, with Tehran’s military officials warning that they are prepared to respond to any new attacks from Washington. Iran’s move to restrict maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital for global oil and gas supplies, has shaken international markets and provided a crucial bargaining tool. Meanwhile, the US has responded with a naval blockade of Tehran’s ports. Details of the US-proposed peace plan remain limited to the public, although reports from several media outlets indicate that the proposal involves a one-page memorandum of understanding intended to end the fighting and establish a framework for negotiations on Iran’s nuclear programme. According to Iran’s Foreign Ministry, the counter-proposal includes demands to end the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, the cessation of the US naval blockade, and the securing of the release of Iran’s frozen assets abroad under long-standing sanctions. The Iranian Foreign Ministry in Tehran did not provide further details on what Iran is offering in return.
