Iran's Supreme Leader Vows Revenge for Death of Ali Khamenei
Istanbul (ANTARA) - Iran’s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, stated on Saturday that avenging the death of his father and predecessor, Ali Khamenei, is a national demand and must be carried out. The statement was delivered in a message read aloud at the funeral ceremony for the late supreme leader, according to Iranian state broadcaster IRIB. “We vow to avenge your innocent blood and that of all the martyrs in these two wars from the criminal and dishonourable murderers,” Mojtaba Khamenei said in his message. He was killed in a US and Israeli attack on Iran that commenced on 28 February, which Iran subsequently retaliated against. According to a Wall Street Journal report on Thursday, Israel recently shared intelligence with the US alleging that Iran was formulating new plans to assassinate US President Donald Trump. In a post on Truth Social on Friday, Trump threatened to launch thousands of missiles at Iran if Tehran attempted to kill him. In June, Tehran and Washington signed a Pakistan-mediated memorandum of understanding to end the war that began in late February and pave the way for a more permanent peace agreement. The memorandum called for an immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, the lifting of the US naval blockade against Iran, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. Despite the understanding, both sides launched fresh attacks on each other this week over commercial shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz. The US struck several targets in Iran, which Tehran retaliated against by targeting US assets in various parts of the region.
