Iran's Supreme Leader successor to Khamenei has been decided
Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has died following an air strike by the United States and Israel, a week ago. Iran says the clerical body charged with choosing Khamenei’s replacement has reached a decision. The name of the new leader will be announced soon.
The vote to appoint the leader has taken place and a leader has been chosen, Ahmad Alamolhoda, a member of the Assembly of Experts, told AFP via Mehr News on Sunday (8 March 2026), as reported by detikNews.
Iran is preparing to announce its new Supreme Leader, after the US-Israel air strike destroyed an oil depot and triggered a fire that enveloped much of Tehran in thick smoke.
The announcement, Alamolhoda said, will be issued by the secretariat of the clerical body. Other members confirmed that a decision had been made, with one suggesting that the late leader’s son could occupy the post.
