Iran's President Asserts No Intention to Expand Conflict with Neighbouring Countries
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that his country’s attacks against American military bases in the Middle East region were carried out on the basis of the nation’s legitimate right to self-defence. Teheran emphasised that it has no intention of expanding conflict with neighbouring countries.
The statement was made by Pezeshkian during a telephone conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as reported by the Tasnim news agency on Wednesday (11 March).
During the conversation, both leaders discussed the latest developments in the region as well as bilateral relations between the two nations. According to Pezeshkian, every Iranian military action targeting American bases in the region was carried out within the framework of self-defence rights as recognised under international law. He also emphasised that Iran has no intention of becoming involved in conflict with countries in the region.
The Iranian President referenced the situation that has developed in recent times. He stated that his country was actually engaged in serious negotiations to resolve several issues when it again became the target of military attacks by the United States and Israel. Teheran asserted that it was in fact the United States that was exploiting the airspace of neighbouring countries to launch attacks against its territory.
For this reason, Pezeshkian warned that any military base used as a launch point for attacks against Iran could become a target for retaliation based on his country’s right to self-defence.
Meanwhile, Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated his country’s position condemning attacks by the United States and Israel against Iran whilst expressing solidarity with Teheran. Sharif also conveyed condolences for the death of Iran’s revolutionary leader Ali Khamenei and offered congratulations on the selection of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new leader.
