Iran's IRGC Rejects New Navigation Route in Strait of Hormuz, Deems It Dangerous

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) Navy of Iran has warned that the only safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz is via routes designated by Iran, rejecting a recently announced new navigation route. In an official statement, the IRGC Navy said that certain authorities had unilaterally announced a new shipping route in the strategic waterway without confirming or coordinating with the Islamic Republic of Iran. Tehran described the move as unacceptable and highly dangerous. The statement stressed that the sole legitimate shipping lane in the Strait of Hormuz is the route appointed by Iran, warning that navigation outside this corridor is considered extremely dangerous and prohibited. All vessels are cautioned to strictly avoid navigating outside the designated route, the statement said, adding that coordination via Channel 16 with Iranian naval forces is mandatory and that violators will face firm action. The Strait of Hormuz, a narrow maritime chokepoint connecting the Gulf to the Arabian Sea, remains one of the world’s most sensitive shipping corridors. The area is frequently at the centre of disputes over claims regarding navigation management and maritime safety procedures. Both sides have previously reaffirmed their commitment to keeping the strait open for international navigation, whilst maintaining sovereignty over their respective territorial waters and underscoring the importance of continued strategic coordination to ensure stability in the waterway.
