Iran's Foreign Minister: BRICS Must Play a Role in Maintaining Middle Eastern Stability
Tehran — Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi believes that BRICS must play a constructive role in promoting stability and security in the Middle East, according to a statement from Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday.
“Referring to the role and position of BRICS as an organisation aimed at expanding comprehensive cooperation, Araghchi noted that the body must now play a constructive role in supporting regional stability and security,” the ministry stated via Telegram following a telephone conversation between Araghchi and India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar.
On 28 February, the United States and Israel launched brutal attacks against targets in Iran, including Tehran, causing extensive damage and numerous civilian casualties.
Iran responded to this aggression by attacking Israeli territory and American military facilities in the Middle East.
The US and Israel initially claimed their “pre-emptive” strikes were necessary to counter perceived threats from Iran’s nuclear programme, but they subsequently clarified that they sought regime change in Iran.
The US-Israeli strikes resulted in the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on the first day of military operations. The Islamic Republic of Iran declared a 40-day period of mourning.
Russian President Vladimir Putin described Khamenei’s killing as a flagrant violation of international law.
Meanwhile, Russia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the US-Israeli operations and called for immediate de-escalation and cessation of hostilities.
