Iran's Comments Anger Venezuela, Ambassador Summoned

The Venezuelan government summoned Iranian Ambassador Ali Chegini on Tuesday to formally protest comments by Iranian authorities that Caracas deemed ‘disparaging and inappropriate’. Venezuela’s Foreign Ministry confirmed the diplomatic démarche in a statement, though it did not specify the exact remarks that triggered the protest. However, a video circulating online shows Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi recently stating that Iran ‘is not Venezuela’ during discussions about negotiations with the United States. The rift marks a potential turning point for the two oil-rich nations, which have been staunch allies and trading partners since Hugo Chavez came to power in 1999. Chavez’s anti-imperialist stance and hostility towards the ‘Yankee empire’ drew Venezuela closer to Iran, forging a bond over their shared antagonism towards Washington. Beyond ideological alignment, the two countries have signed numerous high-profile agreements over the past three decades in energy, mining, health, and education. During Venezuela’s severe economic crisis in 2020, Iran supplied 1.5 million barrels of petrol when Caracas could not refine its own crude oil. In 2025, Tehran sent more than two million doses of polio and hepatitis vaccines as Venezuela struggled to purchase medicines due to US sanctions. However, the new Venezuelan administration, formed after the US-backed military operation that ousted President Nicolas Maduro in January, may now seek to curry favour with Washington by adopting a different approach towards Iran.
