British counter-terrorism police are reportedly investigating potential links to Iran after an alleged bomb threat against a base housing the United States (US) Air Force was successfully thwarted last weekend.

Citing CNBC International on Monday (28/0hm/2026), British police authorities arrested five men on Sunday near RAF Fairford, located in western England. The five individuals have been officially detained on suspicion of offences related to explosives and terrorism.

RAF Fairford is known to play a crucial role as a US Air Force command post for various operations from the European continent, as well as serving as a launch point for a series of American strikes against Iranian missile sites.

Threats against the military base have been echoed since last July. At that time, the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps explicitly warned that any base used to launch airstrikes against the Islamic Republic constitutes a legitimate target. Iranian Ambassador Seyed Ali Mousavi had also vocally expressed similar sentiments.

“Allowing US bombers to take off from Fairford base is a critical issue for our self-defence,” he asserted.

The British newspaper The Daily Telegraph reported on Monday that police strongly suspect Iran as the most likely state actor behind the terror attack plot. According to various sources speaking to The Telegraph, if Iran is indeed involved, Tehran is likely not relying on criminal proxies as seen in previous incidents. This directly implies the potential for direct state involvement.

When asked regarding the possibility of Tehran’s involvement in the alleged terror plot, British Defence Secretary Wes Streeting declined to provide further comment on Monday.

“It would be very unwise of me to speculate,” said Streeting.

This bomb threat incident erupted as difficult negotiations between the US and Iran appear to have reached a deadlock. The situation was triggered by US President Donald Trump’s firm rejection of Tehran’s conditional offer to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Nevertheless, Trump, in a telephone interview with Axios on Sunday, stated that he still expects US negotiators to re-engage in further talks this week.
