Tehran, Iran (ANTARA) - The Iranian Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) held large-scale exercises along the country’s southern coast on Tuesday (February 24) amid rising tensions with the United States.

The semi-official Fars news agency reported that various units of the IRGC Ground Force took part in the Combined Exercise 1404, which was held to enhance “combat readiness” in the face of threats.

The exercise, which featured modern combat technology and the implementation of new tactics, took place a week after the IRGC Navy held large-scale exercises in the Strait of Hormuz under the direct supervision of Major General Mohammad Pakpour.

Tensions have risen after the US deployed aircraft carriers and bombers to the Persian Gulf region in recent weeks. US President Donald Trump warned that he would choose a military option if nuclear talks failed to produce an agreement.

The third round of indirect talks, mediated by Oman, is scheduled to take place on Thursday in Geneva. Iran is expected to present a draft of its nuclear program to the US.

In the war games in southern Iran on Tuesday, the IRGC deployed drones and cruise missiles.

IRGC special forces also conducted simulated operations to prevent the enemy from approaching the coastline with the support of artillery and attacks from the coast to the sea.

Commander of the IRGC Ground Force, Brigadier General Mohammad Karami, said that all units carried out “pre-designed actions” in various sectors, including missiles, artillery, drones, armored vehicles, and mechanized units.

In a separate exercise on Thursday, the IRGC Ground Force missile units tested new systems with various ranges. One missile was launched at a target and then hit another target at a different location.

According to IRGC commanders, the system is equipped with new navigation, has high accuracy, and carries a warhead capable of penetrating enemy convoys and defensive positions.

Brigadier General Mohammad Hadi Sefidchian said that passive defense measures were also implemented in the field of electronic warfare.

Tensions remain in the region even as nuclear talks continue after both sides expressed readiness to face the possibility of military confrontation.
