Iranian Revolutionary Guard fires on Thai vessel in Strait of Hormuz, three crew missing
Iran’s Revolutionary Guard launched attacks on two vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz, with one target being a bulk carrier flying the Thai flag.
Iran has closed the Strait of Hormuz following attacks by the United States and Israel. Iranian authorities have imposed strict restrictions on those wishing to pass through the waterway.
“The Israeli-flagged vessel Express Rome, flying a Liberian flag, and the container ship Mayuree Naree were struck by Iranian projectiles and stopped after ignoring warnings from IRGC naval forces,” the Revolutionary Guard said in a statement carried by Iran’s ISNA news agency, according to AFP, on Wednesday (11 March 2026).
Commander of the Revolutionary Guard’s naval forces, Alireza Tangsiri, stated in a post on X that “every vessel intending to pass must obtain permission from Iran”.
Following the attack on the Thai-flagged vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, Thailand’s authorities responded. Thailand’s Ministry of Transport stated that twenty crew members had been safely rescued, although three other crew members remain missing.
The ministry said that the crew members had abandoned the ship via lifeboats and were rescued by Omani naval forces. As a result of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s attack, an explosion occurred at the vessel’s stern and caused a fire in the engine compartment, where three other crew members were working.
