Tehran (ANTARA) - Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said on Sunday (2/8) that the United States must remain committed to the memorandum of understanding (MoU) on peace signed between the two countries.

He made the statement in a post on the social media platform X, saying there was consensus among members of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council regarding the MoU.

Pezeshkian said he was confident the MoU would become a focal point of Iran’s foreign relations in the future, as reported by Xinhua.

“We must strive to compel the enemy to comply with what it has signed. The security of our country, the region and our allies will improve thanks to this MoU,” he said.

On 18 June, Iran and the US signed the MoU, which stipulated that the two countries were scheduled to hold negotiations within 60 days to reach a final agreement.

However, the fate of those talks now hangs in the balance due to the recent escalation between the two parties.

The US military launched several waves of attacks against Iranian targets last month, stating that the strikes were a response to Iranian attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz and aimed at “weakening Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping”.

Iran subsequently responded with missile and drone attacks targeting US military bases and facilities in the region.
