Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian Calls for Restraint Amid US Conflict
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called on all parties to refrain from steps that could worsen the situation in the Middle East. The appeal comes amid rising tensions and tit-for-tat attacks between Iran and the United States that threaten regional stability.
According to Pezeshkian, there is currently a trend in which the United States and Israel are attempting to disrupt the stabilisation process in the Middle East. He stressed the importance of diplomatic efforts to strengthen the ceasefire and prevent the crisis from spreading further.
βIt is reasonable to expect that other parties also honour their commitments and refrain from positions or actions that would undermine trust and complicate the diplomatic process,β Pezeshkian said during a telephone conversation with Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as released by the Iranian presidential office on Saturday (11/7).
The security situation deteriorated after the United States launched airstrikes on Iranian territory on Wednesday night. US Central Command (CENTCOM) claimed the action was in retaliation for Iranian actions against commercial vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
Responding to the attack, Iranian forces launched a counter-strike targeting American military bases in Bahrain and Kuwait. Tehran accused Washington of violating a memorandum of understanding (MoU) regarding the cessation of hostilities that had previously been agreed.
Tensions reached a critical point after US President Donald Trump issued an official statement on the status of bilateral relations. Trump asserted that the ceasefire between the United States and Iran is now considered no longer in effect.
The situation has sparked international concern over the possibility of a larger open conflict. Pezeshkian continues to push for diplomatic communication channels with regional leaders, including Pakistan, in order to find a way out of the current military impasse.
