Iranian Parliament to Implement New Navigation Rules in Strait of Hormuz
Tehran (ANTARA) - Iran’s parliament will introduce a new navigation regime in the Strait of Hormuz, whereby Tehran will guarantee the safety of ship navigation while imposing transit fees. The statement was made by Alaeddin Boroujerdi, a member of the parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, on Monday. “With the parliament’s approval, the new regime will be enforced in the strait,” Boroujerdi said, as quoted by IRIB broadcaster. Boroujerdi added that no ship will be allowed to cross the Strait of Hormuz without Iranian permission. Tehran, he continued, will also ensure the security of ships and implement transit tariffs. Escalation of conflict around Iran has caused a de facto blockade in the Strait of Hormuz, which is a vital route for shipping oil and liquefied natural gas from Persian Gulf countries to global markets. The blockade has also affected oil export and production levels in the region. As a result, fuel prices have risen in most countries around the world.
