Iranian Missiles Strike Kuwait Base, Seven Injured Including US Personnel

At least seven people were injured in an Iranian missile strike on a US airbase in Kuwait last week. Tehran claimed the attack was in response to US strikes on southern Iran.

According to Anadolu Agency, citing US media outlet CBS News on Sunday (31 May), the Iranian missile attack on the US base in Kuwait occurred on Wednesday (27 May). CBS News reported the seven injured included four US military personnel and three civilian contractors stationed at the Kuwaiti airbase. All seven sustained minor injuries and returned to duty within 24 hours of the attack.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) previously stated that Iranian ballistic missiles were launched towards Kuwait on 27 May and were “successfully intercepted by Kuwaiti forces”.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced on Thursday (28 May) that its forces targeted a US base in retaliation for Washington’s strike near Bandar Abbas airport in southern Iran. However, the IRGC did not specify the exact location of the targeted US base.

In a separate attack on Monday (1 June) morning, the IRGC’s air force claimed to have targeted and destroyed a US base used for operations against communication facilities on Sirik Island in Hormozgan Province. The IRGC again did not specify the exact location but asserted all designated targets were destroyed in the retaliatory strike.

This came after Kuwaiti military confirmed their air defence systems had intercepted “enemy missile and drone attacks”.

Meanwhile, CENTCOM announced in a recent statement that US forces had struck Iranian radar and drone command sites in the Goruk area and Qeshm Island on 30 and 31 May. CENTCOM described the action as a “defensive strike” in response to “aggressive Iranian actions, including the downing of a US MQ-1 drone operating over international waters”.
