Iranian Military Urges US to Honour Peace Deal Amid Hormuz Strait Tensions
The Iranian military has urged the United States to comply with the peace agreement signed by Tehran and Washington last June, amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian military spokesman Brigadier General Mohammad Akraminia told Iran’s national broadcaster IRIB on Sunday that US intervention to create what he described as an illegal route across the Strait of Hormuz had generated insecurity in the region.
He emphasised that Iran’s armed forces would firmly defend the rights of the Iranian people in the Strait of Hormuz.
Akraminia also said that the Iranian military periodically updates its list of strike targets.
The statement came after Iran launched missile and drone attacks against US military bases and installations in several Gulf countries, while the United States carried out a third round of strikes targeting radar, missile and drone installations in southern Iran.
According to the US Central Command (CENTCOM), the attacks were in retaliation for Iran firing on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and closing the strategic waterway until further notice, with one person reported missing.
The IRGC Navy closed the Strait of Hormuz following tensions with commercial vessels and retaliatory attacks on American assets in the region. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) officially announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz for an indefinite period.
The United States urged Iran to guarantee that the Strait of Hormuz remains open, whilst President Donald Trump declared that the ceasefire with Iran had officially ended.
Iran has overhauled its military doctrine to confront the United States, employing new tactics that exploit its geographic position at the Strait of Hormuz to paralyse the Western economy.
US intelligence reports revealed that Iran has accelerated drone and missile production during the ceasefire, raising concerns of a new regional threat.
Iran warned that it would open a new front if attacked again by Israel and the United States, and asserted that it still controls the Strait of Hormuz.
There are calls within Iran to end the dispute through total military confrontation rather than pursuing diplomacy.
The Iranian government showcased its long-range Arash drones and missiles at a national rally.
US President Donald Trump claimed that Iran’s combat capability has been crippled, including the destruction of 154 vessels and missile launchers, and declared that the war has been won by the US military. (Ant/Anadolu)
