Iranian Foreign Minister: Pentagon "Lying", US War Costs $100 Billion
Istanbul (ANTARA) - Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Friday (1/5) accused the United States of misrepresenting the costs of war, stating that the official figures significantly underestimate the actual financial burden.
In a post on the social media platform X, the Iranian Foreign Minister stated that the Pentagon is “lying” about the war costs, adding that the figure has reached $100 billion.
“Risky speculation by Netanyahu has already cost America $100 billion so far, four times what is claimed,” he wrote, referring to Israeli authority leader Benjamin Netanyahu.
Araghchi said the indirect costs borne by US taxpayers are “much higher. The monthly bill for every American household reaches $500 and is rising rapidly.”
He also criticised US policy towards Israel by writing, “Israel First always means America Last” (prioritising Israel means sacrificing American interests).
On Wednesday, Pentagon official Jules Hurst testified before Congress that “Operation Epic Fury” has so far cost around $25 billion.
The United States and Israel began a joint attack against Iran on 28 February, which triggered retaliation from Tehran against US allies in the Gulf region and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
A ceasefire was announced on 8 April through mediation by Pakistan, followed by talks in Islamabad on 11–12 April, but the marathon negotiations did not yield an agreement.
US President Donald Trump later unilaterally extended the ceasefire without setting a new deadline, at Pakistan’s request.
