Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi Says US Economic Sanctions Will Surely Fail
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has asserted that the latest economic sanctions threatened by the United States against his country are certain to fail. His strong statement refers to the track record of similar sanction efforts undertaken by Washington in the past that have yielded no results.
Araghchi’s reaction came as a direct response to US President Donald Trump’s announcement of plans to launch a large-scale economic pressure campaign. Trump described the move as an “Economic War and Isolation” aimed at severing all financial channels that support the Iranian government.
In a post on social media on Friday (21/8), Araghchi laid out a timeline of the failure of US pressure policies against Tehran. He stressed that the rhetoric of “crippling” sanctions is nothing new for Iran.
“Fourteen years ago, the most crippling sanctions in history failed. Eight years ago, maximum pressure failed,” Araghchi wrote. He also referred to the failure of Trump’s call five months ago demanding that Iran surrender unconditionally.
To strengthen his argument, Araghchi posted an image of former US President Barack Obama accompanied by a 2012 statement from Joe Biden, who was then serving as US Vice President. In the quote, Biden described the actions against Iran as “the most crippling sanctions in the history of sanctions”. Araghchi assessed that Trump’s move, now described as “the most devastating economic operation ever”, will only end with a similar result.
On the other hand, Donald Trump in his announcement warned of severe consequences for any country or entity that provides economic assistance to Iran. Trump openly called on America’s allies to join the effort to cripple Tehran’s financial stability.
Despite mounting international pressure, Iran maintains its position that the strategy of economic isolation will not succeed in forcing it to submit to Washington’s will. Araghchi stressed that historical experience is evidence of Iran’s resilience in the face of external pressure.
