Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - The Supreme Leadership Council (Majelis Khobregan Kepemimpinan) has officially appointed Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei as the Third Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran. The appointment followed the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in military strikes conducted by the United States and Israel in late February.

In an official press statement from the Iranian Embassy in Jakarta received on Monday 9 March 2026, it was noted that Mojtaba Khamenei was elected with more than 85% of the Supreme Leadership Council votes. The election was conducted pursuant to Articles 107 and 108 of the Iranian Constitution for an eight-year term.

With Khamenei’s replacement confirmed, the Iranian Embassy emphasised that this leadership transition remains secure. Immediately following the appointment, Iran activated strategic military measures under new command.

Iran also stated that it had launched the 30th phase of a new operation under Mojtaba’s leadership. “In this context, this morning the 30th phase of ‘Operation True Promise 4’ (Va’deh Sadegh-4) was carried out under the command of Ayatollah Seyyed Mojtaba Khamenei against the Zionist territories of Israel,” the official statement read.

Casualties

In the release, Iran detailed the significant impact of attacks by the United States and Israel over the past ten days. To date, more than 1,300 children and civilians have been killed.

Additionally, 9,669 civilian targets have been reported destroyed, including 7,943 residential units, medical centres, schools and energy infrastructure.

Attacks on Iranian maritime assets in international waters were also highlighted. The Embassy revealed that the unarmed warship “Dena” was attacked whilst en route to India following an official invitation from the Indian Navy.

“Without any warning whatsoever, the vessel became a target of attack in international waters, which constitutes a flagrant violation of international law. This American action is not only a heinous crime, but also extends the scope of war beyond Iran’s coastal territories and threatens international maritime security,” the Iranian Embassy stated firmly in its release.

Iran Closes Diplomatic Channels with the United States

In the same statement, Iran announced it had shut the door to negotiations with Washington. The Iranian Embassy stated that America had committed diplomatic betrayals on three occasions.

Iran cited this beginning with the unilateral withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018, an attack in June 2025, and the most recent attack on 28 February 2026, which occurred immediately after the second round of negotiations. On this basis, Tehran affirmed its legal right to preserve territorial integrity in accordance with Article 51 of the UN Charter.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran declares that the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran will use all their capabilities and capacity to confront this criminal aggression until that aggression is halted, or until the UN Security Council fulfils its duties in accordance with Article 39 of the UN Charter,” the statement concluded.

The Iranian Embassy in Indonesia also strongly condemned attacks on public facilities including passenger aircraft and desalination facilities on Qeshm Island, whilst calling upon the international community to identify the aggressors.
