Iranian Embassy Conveys Condolences Over Death of Indonesian Peacekeeper in Conflict Zone
The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia has conveyed deep condolences over the death of an Indonesian peacekeeper in the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon. In its statement, Iran also strongly condemned the incident and asserted that attacks on peacekeeping forces constitute a serious violation of international law.
In its official statement, the Iranian Embassy described the incident as a tragic event and extended sympathy to the victim’s family and the entire Indonesian nation in mourning.
“The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran conveys its deepest condolences over the tragic loss of an Indonesian peacekeeper,” the Iranian Embassy wrote on its official X page on Monday (30/3).
In addition to expressing condolences, Iran strongly condemned the incident that caused the soldier’s death. In its statement, Iran assessed the event as a consequence of rising tensions and conflicts in the region, specifically linking it to ongoing Israeli military actions.
Iran also highlighted the importance of protecting UN peacekeeping personnel. According to the statement, attacks on peacekeeping forces are a serious violation of international law and must not go unpunished.
“Targeting peacekeepers is a grave violation of international law and must not be allowed without consequences,” the statement continued.
The incident that killed the Indonesian soldier occurred in southern Lebanon, an area that has long been part of UNIFIL operations. Initial reports indicate that an Indonesian personnel was killed by a projectile explosion amid escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah along the Lebanon-Israel border.
The Indonesian government itself has strongly condemned the incident and urged a thorough investigation, while emphasising that the safety of peacekeeping forces must be guaranteed under all circumstances.
The escalating tensions in the Middle East in recent times have increased risks to international forces tasked with maintaining stability, including the Indonesian contingent, which is one of the largest contributors to the UNIFIL mission.
The Iranian Embassy’s statement adds to the list of international responses to the incident, while further emphasising global attention on the security of peacekeeping forces in conflict zones.
