Jakarta — The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran has strongly condemned the attack by the United States and Israel that killed 175 female students at Shajareh Tayyebeh Elementary School for Girls in Minab city, Hormozgan Province, Iran, on 28 February 2026, characterising it as a war crime.

“These defenceless children, who were only present in the classroom to study and build a bright future, became victims of violence due to a missile strike,” said Iranian Ambassador to Indonesia Mohammad Boroujerdi during a condolence event at his residence in Jakarta on Saturday (14 March).

The attack on an elementary school and the killing of 175 female students constitutes a violation of the principle of distinction between military and civilian targets and represents a clear example of a war crime.

“What further clarifies this bitter reality is that American officials themselves have also acknowledged that the attack was carried out by them,” the Ambassador said.

“This acknowledgement demonstrates the direct responsibility of the perpetrators and further emphasises the importance of accountability and legal action against this crime within the framework of international mechanisms,” he added.

The targeting of a school and the killing of defenceless children also constitutes a clear violation of the fundamental principles of international humanitarian law and obligations under various legitimate international instruments, including the Geneva Conventions and rules for the protection of civilians during armed conflict.

Based on these principles, civilians, especially children and educational institutions, must be fully protected from military attacks, Ambassador Boroujerdi stated.

Moreover, the attack occurred whilst Iran was pursuing diplomatic channels, dialogue and negotiations to achieve a peaceful solution and strengthen regional peace and stability.

Amid the continuing US and Israeli attacks against civilians, including children, the Iranian Embassy called upon the international community, including Indonesia, active Islamic organisations, international human rights bodies and organisations defending children’s rights to not remain silent against such crimes.

“By firmly condemning such action, it is hoped that they will take steps to uncover the truth, demand accountability from the perpetrators and prevent the recurrence of similar tragedies,” the Ambassador said.

He stressed that the protection of children’s lives and civilians is a shared responsibility of all nations and peoples worldwide.

On 28 February, the United States and Israel launched a series of attacks against various targets in Iran, including Tehran.

The attacks caused destruction and claimed hundreds of civilian lives, including an attack on Shajareh Tayyebeh Girls’ Elementary School in Minab city, Hormozgan Province in southern Iran, killing 175 female students and injuring more than 95 children at the school.
