Tehran (ANTARA) - Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov discussed the issue of Iran’s nuclear programme during a meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting in New Delhi.

“Both sides exchanged views on the latest developments in West Asia and negotiations related to Iran’s nuclear issue,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Friday.

During the meeting, the two ministers also discussed cooperation between Tehran and Moscow in the fields of energy and transport, as well as the situation following the ceasefire in the conflict between the United States and Israel against Iran.

Meanwhile, the Russian Foreign Ministry stated that Lavrov, during the meeting, reaffirmed Russia’s readiness to help resolve the conflict related to Iran.

On February 28, the United States and Israel launched attacks on a number of targets in Iran, causing damage and civilian casualties. Iran then retaliated by attacking Israeli territory and US military facilities in the Middle East.

On April 7, Washington and Tehran announced a two-week ceasefire. However, follow-up talks in Islamabad ended without an agreement, so US President Donald Trump extended the cessation of hostilities to give Iran time to prepare a “comprehensive proposal”.

The escalation of tensions as a result of the US-Israeli attacks on Iran almost halted shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, a major route for the shipment of oil and liquefied natural gas from the Persian Gulf countries to global markets, which also contributed to rising fuel prices.

The United States is seeking to limit Iran’s nuclear ambitions, while Tehran has demanded guarantees of peace before it is willing to discuss the country’s nuclear programme.
