Iranian Ambassador's Visits Amid Regional Conflict: From JK-Megawati, Now Jokowi
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Boroujerdi, has been captured on camera several times visiting Indonesian figures. The first figure visited by Boroujerdi was the 10th and 12th Vice President of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla. The first meeting took place at JK’s residence on Jalan Brawijaya, South Jakarta, on Tuesday (3/3/2026). At that time, JK conveyed a message to Iran that President Prabowo Subianto is ready to act as a mediator in this conflict. He expressed that Indonesian society and government in principle support peace efforts. Nevertheless, Kalla emphasised that the possibility of such mediation would still be discussed further with the government and depends on the willingness of all involved parties. “Of course, that has been conveyed; of course, the agreement of both parties is needed. And this is certainly something they are considering,” Kalla explained. Two weeks after that meeting, Boroujerdi met JK again at the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) headquarters in South Jakarta on Wednesday (18/3/2026). The death toll is not only military but also civilians, including women and children. Iran notes that currently, 250 children have become victims. “We report that the oldest and most senior war victim in our country is 88 years old, while the youngest is an infant only 3 days old,” Boroujerdi said during his meeting with the 10th and 12th Vice President of Indonesia, Jusuf Kalla, at the PMI headquarters in South Jakarta on Wednesday (18/3/2026). During the Ramadan fasting month, Boroujerdi complained that Iranian society is threatened with not being able to celebrate Eid al-Fitr due to the war. In addition, Iran is also launching a campaign to emphasise efforts to stop the ongoing war. “On the initiative of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, we will start a global campaign to say no to war,” he stated. Boroujerdi hopes that Indonesian officials, academics, civil society organisations, and other elements will participate in this campaign. Meeting Megawati during Eid The second figure met by Boroujerdi was the 5th President of Indonesia, Megawati Soekarnoputri, at her residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta, on 10 March 2026. In that meeting, Megawati mentioned having sent condolences when Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was killed in an Israeli-United States missile attack. The second letter was congratulations on the election of Mojtaba Khamenei as Iran’s new leader.
