Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mohammad Boroujerdi, visited Solo to meet former seventh President of Indonesia Joko Widodo and the Mayor of Surakarta Respati Achmad Ardianto, discussing the latest developments in the Middle East.

Through a statement posted on the official social media account of the Iranian Embassy in Jakarta, @iraninindonesia, on Wednesday (1/4), the Iranian Embassy stated that during the visit to Solo, Ambassador Boroujerdi held a dialogue with the seventh former President of Indonesia Joko Widodo.

In the meeting, both sides exchanged views on regional developments, the current situation arising from the war imposed on the Islamic Republic of Iran, and the humanitarian and economic impacts it has caused.

On that occasion, Joko Widodo expressed sympathy for the people of Iran, and stated his and the Indonesian people’s support for the steadfastness and resistance of the government and people of Iran in defending their national sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security.

He also conveyed hopes for the health, victory, and prosperity of the Iranian people, and hoped that peace, stability, and calm would soon return to the region.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Boroujerdi provided a comprehensive report on the current field conditions, including various attacks on civilian areas, vital infrastructure, and economic facilities in Iran.

He also expressed concern over the humanitarian and security impacts of those actions and affirmed the legitimate right of the Iranian people to defend themselves in accordance with international law.

At the end of the meeting, both sides reaffirmed the long-standing and friendly relations between the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Indonesia.

They also emphasised the importance of continuing dialogue, strengthening bilateral cooperation, and expanding relations between the peoples of the two countries.

Meanwhile, during the visit to the Surakarta Mayor’s Office, Ambassador Boroujerdi met with Surakarta Mayor Respati Achmad Ardianto.

In the meeting, Mayor Respati condemned attacks on civilians and all forms of aggression.

Referring to the Constitution of the Republic of Indonesia, the Mayor affirmed that Indonesia’s constitution rejects all forms of aggression and foreign occupation, and maintains an independent and clear stance on the matter.

During the visit, Ambassador Boroujerdi also reported on attacks by the US and the Zionist Israeli regime against civilians, vital infrastructure, centres of civilisation, and energy facilities in Iran, and expressed concern over the impacts of those actions.

At the end of the meeting, both sides emphasised the importance of expanding cooperation, particularly in strengthening people-to-people relations, developing trade and economic cooperation especially in the tourism sector.

They also explored the possibility of establishing sister city relations between Surakarta and one of the cities in Iran, which was agreed to be a follow-up agenda moving forward, according to the statement from the Iranian Embassy in Jakarta.
