Iranian Ambassador: Strait of Hormuz Is Not Closed
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, stated that the Government of Iran has not closed the Strait of Hormuz. ‘The Strait of Hormuz is not closed; it remains open,’ Boroujerdi told reporters at his official residence on Jalan Madiun, Menteng, Central Jakarta, on Thursday (5 March 2026). As the country responsible for the strait, Iran only implements traffic protocols during wartime. ‘Parties that comply with the protocols can pass easily through the Strait of Hormuz,’ he insisted. ‘Security in the Strait of Hormuz is for all countries, including Iran, and there must not be any country exploiting security there,’ he said. ‘Those worried about the closure should ask the United States, which has come from very far to the Middle East region, and is disrupting security in the Strait of Hormuz.’ Earlier reports said Israel attacked Tehran, Iran, on Saturday morning (28 February 2026). After the attack, Israel closed its airspace and declared a state of emergency. Quoted by The Guardian, Israel closed its airspace to anticipate possible retaliation from Iran with drones and missiles. A spokesperson for the Israeli military said the attack was a preliminary step to remove the threat to the country. Meanwhile, Agence France-Presse reported two explosions heard in Tehran. The United States is said to have been involved in the attack. The information was provided by several U.S. officials and other sources with knowledge of the operation. The attack occurred as the United States deployed a large flotilla of fighter jets and warships to the region to pressure Iran to reach a deal on its nuclear program. Now, Tasnim and Fars news agencies have confirmed the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. However, there are no details about his death announced. Following Khamenei’s death, Iran declared a 40-day period of mourning and seven days of national holidays.
