Iranian Ambassador Meets Jokowi in Solo
Indonesia’s seventh president, Joko Widodo, received a visit from the Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, at his home in Sumber Ward, Banjarsari District, Solo City, Central Java, on Wednesday, 1 April 2026. Boroujerdi had previously met with Solo Mayor Respati Ardi at Solo City Hall.
Boroujerdi, accompanied by a delegation from the Iranian Embassy, arrived at Jokowi’s home around 11:00 WIB. Jokowi personally welcomed the Iranian Embassy delegation at the front of his house and invited them inside.
The nearly two-hour meeting included Jokowi inviting Boroujerdi and the delegation to lunch, featuring dishes such as lontong sayur, gulai kambing, mi aceh, ayam goreng kremes, telur ceplok, and nasi goreng.
Following the meeting, Jokowi stated that it was part of maintaining diplomatic relations between the two countries. “Essentially, we want to continue maintaining diplomatic relations between Indonesia and Iran. I think this is good for economic affairs as well as good for geopolitical affairs,” Jokowi told reporters.
When asked about lobbying efforts regarding the Indonesian ship detained in the Strait of Hormuz, he emphasised that it was a matter for the government. Regarding the invitation to campaign for peace, Jokowi considered it positive.
“If it’s about campaigning to fight, I think it’s good to campaign to stop the war, an anti-war campaign,” he said.
The former Solo Mayor emphasised that the world needs a peaceful world and good relations between countries. With peace, he said, prosperity and economic growth can proceed normally without obstacles.
“I think the world needs a peaceful world. It needs good relations between countries so that prosperity, economic growth, everything can run normally without obstacles,” he said.
He gave the example that currently all countries are facing difficulties with energy and oil. All of that could be resolved if there were no war. “For example, right now all countries are having trouble with energy, all countries are having trouble with oil. That wouldn’t happen if there was no war,” he said.
Meanwhile, Boroujerdi said the meeting with Jokowi today took place in a warm and friendly atmosphere. In addition to being an occasion for greetings, he said the visit was also an opportunity for his side to discuss several important issues.
“I had the opportunity to meet with His Excellency Mr Joko Widodo to wish him a happy Eid al-Fitr and pray for his health and family,” Boroujerdi said.
In the meeting, Boroujerdi expressed appreciation for the warm welcome given by Jokowi. He also used the opportunity to report on the current conditions faced by his country. According to him, the situation in Iran is related to conflicts involving foreign parties.
“We reported on the latest situation of the war in Iran as well as attacks carried out by Israel and the United States,” he revealed.
Boroujerdi said that in the meeting, Jokowi also expressed support and solidarity to the Iranian people. He considered this stance to reflect concern for the global humanitarian situation. The support was said to be meaningful for the Iranian government and people.
“He kindly expressed his support for the Iranian people,” he said.
In addition to discussing the situation in Iran, Boroujerdi also expressed condolences for the incident that befell Indonesian peacekeeping forces in Lebanon. He highlighted the deaths of three TNI soldiers and the wounded victims in the incident. He also strongly condemned the attack, which he considered a violation of international law.
“We express our condolences for the passing of three of Indonesia’s best soldiers and strongly condemn that action,” he said.
On that occasion, Boroujerdi also praised Jokowi’s leadership during his tenure as president. He considered Indonesia to have experienced rapid progress in various sectors under that leadership. In addition, Indonesia’s foreign relations were also seen as increasingly broad and strategic.
“Mr Joko Widodo is one of Indonesia’s successful leaders who has brought rapid progress to his country,” he said.
He also mentioned the close bilateral relations between Indonesia and Iran in recent years. This was marked by Jokowi’s visit to Iran as well as the visit of Iran’s then-President Ebrahim Raisi to Indonesia in 2023. Those meetings were seen as strengthening cooperation between the two countries.
“This shows great efforts to expand relations between Iran and Indonesia,” he said.
Boroujerdi also expressed appreciation to the Indonesian government and people for the support given to Iran. He considered that support very meaningful amid the difficult situation faced by his country. He hopes that the friendship between the two countries can continue to be maintained well.
“We thank the Indonesian government and people for their support to Iran during these difficult times,” he said.
Boroujerdi also invited various parties in Indonesia to support the anti-war campaign. He said the campaign was spearheaded by several Islamic organisations and peace-loving groups. He hopes that more parties will be involved in efforts to maintain peace.
“We hope to continue to enliven the ‘Reject War’ campaign and gain support from various parties in Indonesia,” he said.
