Iranian Ambassador Lists Long History of US Wrongdoings Against Iran Since 1953
JAKARTA — Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, has outlined an extensive list of grievances against the United States, claiming American intervention in Iranian affairs dating back to 1953.
Speaking at a press conference at his official residence in Jakarta’s Menteng district on Monday, 2 March 2026, Boroujerdi stated that in 1953, the US assisted in orchestrating a coup in Iran. At that time, the US supported Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi in overthrowing the democratically elected government of Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh, replacing it with a regime backed directly by the United States.
“In 1980, they provided maximum encouragement and support to Saddam Hussein’s regime to attack Iran, and imposed eight years of war on our nation,” Boroujerdi said.
The ambassador further alleged that the US subsequently promoted and sponsored various terrorist operations targeting Iranian civilians, resulting in tens of thousands of Iranian casualties from attacks.
“If I were to list them one by one, I would have to explain a long history. I am only mentioning some of them,” he stated.
Boroujerdi accused the US of exploiting Islamophobia to establish terrorist groups such as ISIS and Daesh throughout the region. In 2020, he claimed that after failing to force Iran into submission, the US assassinated a senior Iranian general widely regarded as an anti-ISIS hero in Iraq.
“On 26 October 2024, by encouraging the Zionist regime of Israel, they attacked Iranian military sites, economic infrastructure, and innocent civilians,” he explained.
In June 2025, the ambassador said, the US provided arms and support for a 12-day assault on Iranian territory that killed senior officials, military officers, and commanders. During the same month, attacks were reportedly launched against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities, which operate under direct supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Boroujerdi further alleged that prior to these attacks, the US had engineered economic discontent within Iran and manipulated peaceful public demonstrations. He claimed that CIA and Mossad agents had infiltrated these movements to maximise civilian casualties.
“They hijacked peaceful public action by our people, then executed their project of creating maximum casualties,” he said.
