Iranian Ambassador Claims Sunni-Shia Sectarian Divide is a Zionist Fabrication
Iran’s Ambassador to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, stated that the war between Israel and the United States against Iran has sparked debates regarding Sunni versus Shia sects. He revealed that the issue of Sunni-Shia division was initiated by Zionists to divide the Muslim ummah.
“Differences or even divisions have indeed existed due to differences. Inter-sect divisions and inter-religious divisions were actually initiated and conditioned by Zionists so that Muslims in their sects or humanity in their religions become compartmentalised, separated, and scattered,” said Mohammad Boroujerdi to reporters in South Jakarta on Friday (3/4/2026).
He said that once scattered, Iran would become weak. This would create an opening to be easily destroyed, even eliminated, by Zionists.
“As for Iran’s response to this issue, there is no longer any discussion of Sunni and Shia there because Iran’s society is diverse; there are several regions where the majority are Ahlus Sunnah,” he explained.
“In the western regions and in the occupied eastern regions, the majority are Ahlus Sunnah (Sunni), but there are still Shia residents. Likewise, vice versa, in Shia communities there are also Ahlus Sunnah and they no longer know separation,” he added.
Mohammad Boroujerdi explained that some Ahlus Sunnah even become soldiers and commanders. He stressed that there is no longer any discussion related to Sunni-Shia in Iran.
“So, there is no longer any. They also realise that when missiles from Israel are dropped, these missiles do not choose between Sunni and Shia; everyone will be affected,” he said.
Therefore, Mohammad Boroujerdi conveyed that in wartime conditions, sectarian and religious differences should not be exaggerated. He assessed that it is Israel that separates religions.
“Yes, if we look at the current situation, it is even Israel that divides between religions,” he concluded.
