Iran Warns US: Keep Your Promises or Face the Consequences

Provocations by the United States have heightened tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran’s Parliament Speaker and chief negotiator in talks with the US, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, has declared that the era of unilateral agreements is over and Iran is prepared to retaliate.

“The era of unilateral deals has ended. We warned you, keep your promises or bear the consequences. The reality is before your eyes,” Ghalibaf wrote on the X platform in the early hours of Sunday local time.

The post included an image quoting Article 5 of the ‘Memorandum of Understanding Islamabad’, a peace agreement signed between the US and Iran on 18 June. The article governs the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting the phrase “the Islamic Republic of Iran will make the arrangements.”

Ghalibaf’s statement followed Iran’s launch of missile and drone attacks on US military bases and installations in several Gulf states. The US subsequently carried out a third wave of strikes targeting radar, missile, and drone installations in southern Iran.

According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the American strikes were in retaliation for Iran firing on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and closing the strategic waterway indefinitely, an incident in which one person was reported missing.
