Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned that any new attack by the United States would prompt a response that would make Washington “regret” it. The IRGC claims Tehran has acquired far more advanced weapons than it had at the start of the war.

IRGC spokesman Brigadier General Hossein Mohebbi, as reported by Tasnim News Agency and Middle East Monitor on Friday (16 October 2026), said a new US attack on Iran would be “illogical”, but remained possible.

In an interview with Iranian state television, Mohebbi said US President Donald Trump might consider launching another military operation against Iran to gain political advantage ahead of the midterm elections on 3 November.

He said Tehran was prepared for such a scenario and warned that any new US attack would trigger a response the United States would regret.

“This time, the consequences the US would face would be far more painful,” Mohebbi said.

Mohebbi also claimed that Iran had now acquired much more advanced weapons. He said Tehran had used only older-generation weapons during the war, which began on 28 February.

He did not provide further details about the more advanced weapons.

Mohebbi rejected US officials’ claims that Iran’s authorities were divided and not co-operating with one another, calling the allegations “entirely untrue”.

According to Mohebbi, such claims were deliberately made to justify what he described as the US “failure” in the war.

Mohebbi’s remarks followed media reports, including one by Axios citing reliable sources, that Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had discussed the possibility of attacking Iran ahead of the US midterm elections.
