Iran Warns US: Era of Unilateral Deals is Over

Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the speaker of Iran’s parliament and its chief negotiator in talks with the United States, has declared that the era of unilateral agreements is over amid rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. “The era of unilateral deals has ended. We warned you, honour your promises or face the consequences. The reality is before your eyes,” Ghalibaf wrote on the X platform early Sunday local time. His post included an image quoting Article 5 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, a peace agreement between the US and Iran signed on 18 June. The statement followed an Iranian missile and drone attack on US military bases and installations in several Gulf states, whilst the US launched a third wave of strikes targeting radar, missile, and drone installations in southern Iran. According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), the American strikes were in retaliation for Iran firing on commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz and closing the strategic waterway indefinitely, with one person reported missing.
